Dog Friendly Trails in the Smoky Mountains

One of the best parts about visiting Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge with your dog is all the scenic walking trails and outdoor spaces. While most trails inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park do not allow dogs beyond campgrounds and roads, there are a couple trails that do allow leashed dogs, which are still excellent options.

  • The Gatlinburg Trail. One of the most popular dog-friendly hikes in the area, this 4-mile round-trip trail in Great Smoky Mountains National Park follows the Little Pigeon River between Gatlinburg and the Sugarlands Visitor Center, with plenty of shady spots and water access.
  • Oconoaluftee River Trail. If you find yourself on the other side of the national park from Gatlinburg, this peaceful riverside trail is a favorite pet-friendly hike. A wide path winds through a forest alongside the river, this 3-mile trail is generally quieter than other hiking trails in the park.
  • Seven Islands State Birding Park. North of Sevierville, you’ll find this nature area that welcomes leashed dogs. Over 400 acres next to the French Broad area includes paved paths, river access, and lots of bird watching opportunities.

  • In Pigeon Forge, both Patriot Park and Wear Farm City Park are great options for easy scenic walks, with both offering paved paths, access to the creek or river, and easy pet waste disposal. If you have kids in tow, Wear Farm City Park has a really fun jungle gym and play area as well!
