Winter in the Smoky Mountains transforms our beloved Ober Mountain into a winter wonderland, with tons of fun activities for the whole family. Perched above Gatlinburg, this year-round ski area and mountain adventure park combines thrilling outdoor activities and family fun, with stunning views of the Smokies. Here are the top five things to do at Ober Mountain during your next winter getaway to the Smokies!
Skiing and Snowboarding

Ober Mountain is the only ski resort in Tennessee, which makes it a must-visit destination for anyone visiting Gatlinburg in winter. The resort has ski slopes suited to all levels, with 10 trails that range from beginner-friendly to the more advanced black diamond runs. If you’re new to skiing, you can take private or group skiing lessons at Ober Mountain’s Snowsports School. Rental gear is readily available, including ski clothes, so you can hit the slopes with confidence. Ski area tickets are typically sold in full and half day sessions, so you can decide what works best for you. For the best experience, arrive early in the day for freshly groomed slopes and lighter crowds.
Ice Skating and Ice Bumper Cars
The indoor ice skating rink at Ober Mountain is open year-round, but festive lights and decorations in the winter months makes it an extra special experience. This classic winter activity is great for all ages or skill levels, with skate rentals and adaptive equipment making it an accessible experience. One end of the rink is devoted to ice bumper cars, giving you another option for some silly fun on the ice. The indoor rink gives you a break from the cold, with seating available for anyone who prefers to be a spectator, and an on-site restaurant.
Snow Tubing

If you’re looking to enjoy an exhilarating winter sport with less of a learning curve, snow tubing at Ober Mountain is a great option. This easy, family-friendly activity is one of the most popular activities at Ober Mountain, with children as young as 3 years old able to join in on the excitement. Tubing sessions last 90 minutes and there is a carpet lift so you won’t have to worry about hiking back up the hill after each run. Be sure to book your tubing session in advance, especially if you are visiting on a weekend or holiday!
Take a Scenic Ride
One of the most magical ways to experience Ober Mountain is from above. The Aerial Tramway transports you from downtown Gatlinburg all the way to the resort, a distance over 2 miles. This tramway ride offers a comfortable ride with panoramic views of the Smokies, with breathtaking winter views of snow-dusted mountains and forest. For a different perspective of the mountain, check out the scenic chairlift, which will take you over 3,000 feet up to the peak of Mt. Harrison. This open-air experience provides stunning views with a refreshing mountain breeze.
Tennessee Flyer Mountain Coaster
This unique mountain coaster twists and turns through the forested slopes of Ober Mountain, giving you an up close view of the snow-covered landscape. You control the speed of your cart, so you can take a leisurely ride to enjoy the scenery or add some speed for an exciting descent down the mountain. The mountain coaster operates year-round, but riding in winter can be a special thrill, especially at night when the mountain is lit up.
With so many fun Ober Mountain winter activities, it’s no wonder it’s a top destination in Gatlinburg. Whether you’re hitting the slopes, taking in the views from a scenic tramway ride, or racing family down the tubing hill, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Grab your winter gear, book your vacation rental cabin and make the most of your winter escape to the Smoky Mountains!
